OEF/OIF: The first time I was in Iraq (Feb-Oct 2003) during the war, my platoon wanted a tattoo design for our experience, so I whipped this up. I got it as soon as I got back to Germany, and to my knowledge only three other people have it, but I’ve heard rumors that more did. Oh, and this one REALLY hurt.

“DEZ” armband: Summer 2002, Mannheim, Germany. “Dez” is the former singer for Coal Chamber, current singer for Devildriver. It was my nickname that never really caught on in high school, but evolved into a sort of “pen name” for my artwork. I still sign certain e-mails and letters with it.

Elementree logo: I got it in Garland, Texas, during my Christmas leave in December 2002. Elementree records was started by Korn in 1997, and housed my favorite band of all time ORGY and another kick-ass band, Videodrone. It was also the first to feature my lucky number 113. I’ve always thought it was one of the coolest logos anywhere for anything. Period. (Part of the reason I’m in school for graphic design now!)

Stars: These were my first overseas tattoos. I got them in February 2002 in Mannheim, Germany. If I remember correctly, I drew them the same day.

Kihido star: I got this in December 2001. It’s the logo for the style of Karate I took for years and in which I earned my first degree black belt (May 1998). It’s embellished a little with some astrological signs, but the base “star” pattern is what it is. (Kihido stands for “the shining spirit way”)

Dragon: I drew this in 2001 while I was in US Army AIT at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, and got it tattooed during our graduation pass in November.

He-Man: I never grew out of it! May 2001, just before high school graduation.

Bret Hart’s logo: True role model: the reason I’m what I am today. I got this in February 2001.

Over the next few days we are going to be covering all of SB-1’s tattoos. Each one has a special meaning or special place within SB-1. Each one tells it’s own story. So let us go ahead and get things started with tattoo number one!
Family: I got this on my 18th birthday in 2000, and it took me over a month to draw. It has the most meaning: all my immediate family’s initials with the Japanese symbol for “family” in the middle.
